The trip to Lake Vouligmeni was a JOURNEY. I had nothing planned on my last day in Greece so I really wanted to make the trip out there. It took me two metro lines, and a long bus ride to get to the lake. It was 15 euro for the entrance and I forgot a towel so I paid the 30 euro for my pink towel. Upon arriving I noticed it was in a wealthy area/neighborhood and many of the people there were older who were doing laps in the lake. The water is brackish and there were these small fish that would come up to you and nibble your feet. The lake was beautiful and I spent a few hours there soaking up the sun and wading in the water. Afterwards, I showered off and walked around the surrounding areas. I found a cute beach on the side of a restaurant and the walk through the neighborhood area was very clean.

Due to the winter season, many of the islands were close/closing. I did not know the Greek islands closed during winter and I was planning to go to the island of Moni from Aegina but I ended up staying on Aegina the whole day and going to the beaches. The ferry to the island was around 1.5 hours and the view in the morning was beautiful with the sun out and seagulls following the boat. The main way around the island is by taxi. The number to call is (0030) 22970 22200. I called a taxi to get to and from the beaches I found. There are also many taxis waiting to be called on by the ferry port.
The water was freezing so I did not swim, but it was peaceful to lay on the sand in the sun and explore around the island. Although there was not much else to do, I had a good experience exploring the island. A few other islands I hope to visit one day is Santorini, Mykonos, Hydra, Paros, Corfu, and Kos. Greek food is one of my favorite cuisines. My favorite was definitely their famous pork gyros that I got at Tylixto Gyros. The first meal I had in Greece was at All that Jatz. I ordered a pork souvlaki with rice wrapped in grape vines. The grape vines were more sour than I was expecting but overall it was delicious. For breakfast I went to Omnivore and tried their salmon eggs Benedict and greek yogurt with fresh fruits. The eggs Benedict does not come with any bread which was interesting however, the greek yogurt was very thick, authentic, and extremely filling (If you look up nutrition facts, greek yogurt is very healthy for your gut). A few other dishes I tried was the Moussaka and Baklava at Efcharis (The Baklava was very sweet), an iced cappuccino and omelette at Aiakeion, eggs kayanas (Strapatsada) at ifeel cafe, and dessert loukoumades. I also want to add that the eggs kayanas I had for breakfast on toast was SO good and I would suggest you try it. It is basically scrambled eggs with tomatoes and olive oil.
A few other dishes I hope to try one day is the Horiatiki salad (Greek salad), Saganaki (Cheese in pan), Spanakopita (Spinach pies), and Ouzo (Greece's national drink) Athens was the first solo trip I ever took in a foreign country. I was nervous in the beginning because I did not know what to expect and as a small woman who was alone, I wanted to ensure my safety. But after doing extensive research and asking a friend I met in London who lived in Greece, I felt confident in myself that I could do this trip. Greece is said to be one of the safest cities to travel solo to as a female. Plus, with so many people constantly walking the streets during the day and night, I always felt safe. I decided to stay in my own airbnb for the weekend which was extremely comfortable and I am happy with the place and location I chose.
My airbnb was walking distance to the acropolis which was perfect and I was also close to the Athens flea market and Plaza town as well. I was able to see Odeon of Herodes, the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum, the Parthenon, Museum of Ancient Agora, Temple of Hephaestus, the Roman Agora, and Hadrians Library with the all included ticket I bought at the Acropolis. My favorite sights were the Parthenon and the Odeon of Herodes. All of the structures are more Grand in person. Although it was a LOT of walking, it was peaceful doing this solo trip and I learned a lot about myself and my capabilities which was insightful. |
